Design Notes
Designed for club racing, buoy racing, and pleasure sailing, the Columbia 30 was intended to offer high performance, comfort and ease of use, and value. She has a typical plumb bow, reverse-stern with a fine entry, tall rig, and open cockpit. The hull is designed to plane and both rudder and keel are high-aspect-ratio sections.
The rig consists of a 42' tall carbon-fiber mast by Southern Spars with double set of swept spreaders, eliminating the need for a backstay. The aluminum boom by LeFiell, is fitted with two internal reef lines.
Her standard suit of sails includes a mainsail and 90% jib, with a square-top mainsail, which greatly increases sail area over a conventional main.
Two important appendages - a retractable bow pole and a retractable keel, while taking up room in the cabin, offer improved sail handling/performance and trailerability, respectively. The bow pole is housed in a collision bulkhead, producing a watertight compartment, and draining water overboard that might enter the housing.
The keel is a thin aerodynamic section constructed of multiple layers of carbon fiber, with a 1,400 lb bulb. Hoisting the keel is a simple matter of cranking a handle attached to a lifting winch affixed to the bottom of the mast compression post. a 42:1 ratio worm gear drive eases the chore of retracting the keel.
She is built to be trailerable, and to that end has (2) sets of lifting bridles, retractable keel, and removable rudder.
Accomodations
Accommodations are adequate for overnight racing/cruising, with a V-berth forward with cushions and hanging locker, the head located immediately to port under a flip-up lid. There is a foredeck hatch overhead.
Moving aft, the salon has good headroom, with cushioned seating/berths port and starboard. To centerline is the housing for the retractable keel, which is covered by a removable varnished wood table. To port and starboard are small athwartship counters with stowage lockers that conceal a freshwater sink to starboard, and a (new & unused) gas cooktop to port.
Outboard of the steps up to the cockpit, are port and starboard quarter berths.
All machinery is outside the cabin, in below deck areas so that there is no fuel smell nor excessive noise in the cabin area.
